札幌市を拠点に活動される美術家 瀬川 葉子様の名刺デザインを担当させていただきました。
デザインは両面行っており、裏面でも面白いことをしているのですが、今回は諸般の事情により、表面のデザインだけご紹介させていただきます。

I was in charge of the business card design for Yoko Segawa, an artist based in Sapporo. The design is done on both sides, and there are some interesting things done on the back side as well, but due to various circumstances, I will only introduce the design on the front side this time. 「表面に自身の作品を掲載したい」と名刺デザインのご依頼をいただいた際にご相談いただき、「あとは大塚さんの感性に全てお任せします。」というなんとも嬉しいご依頼でした。
ご期待に応えるため、私が最初に考えたのが「美術家様の作品をデザイナーの個性で表現する」ということでした。
私は美術に関しては素人ですが、デザイナーとして図形の中で最も基本の「円」で自分らしさを表現し、瀬川様との作品の融合を試みようと考え始め、約2週間に渡って、ただひたすら円を描き続けました。

人生の中でもここまで円のことを考えて生活したのは初めてでした。
When I received a request for a business card design, saying, ``I would like to display my own work on the front,'' Mr. Otsuka consulted with me, and he said, ``I will leave everything to Mr. Otsuka's sensibilities.'' It was a very happy request. In order to meet their expectations, my first idea was to express the artist's work with the designer's individuality. I'm an amateur when it comes to art, but as a designer, I started thinking about expressing myself using the most basic of shapes, the circle, and trying to combine my work with Mrs. Segawa. I just kept drawing circles.
This is part of the documents from that time. It was the first time in my life that I had thought so much about the yen.
円に対するブレストがある程度熟成したら、細かい調整を行い整形。
自身で撮影した瀬川様の作品をズラッと並べ、円と写真を1点1点確認しながら、パターンの検証を繰り返します。
おびただしいパターン検証のうえ、最善の組み合わせで円で写真の「型抜き」を実施。作品の“気配”を残す世界に1つだけの円を作ってゆきます。
Once the breast for the circle has matured to a certain extent, fine adjustments are made and the shape is shaped. I lined up Segawa's works that I photographed myself and repeatedly verified the patterns while checking each circle and photo one by one. After testing numerous patterns, we found the best combination and cut out the photo in a circle. We will create only one circle in the world that will leave the “sign” of the work.
最終的に12パターンを厳選し、「1つの絵画」として作品の集合体を作品として整形。
名刺をお渡しした際に「これはなんですか？」と会話のきかっけになるような。
「これはですね…」と意気揚々に語る瀬川様をイメージしながら愛情を込めてデザインさせていただきました。
「美術」という抽象度の高い難しいテーマに対して、ある種の原点回帰を通し、デザイナーとして向き合い、1つの解に辿り着くことができました。
「こんな発想、私は絶対に出てこない。大塚さんにお任せしてよかった。」
ああ。やっぱり私はこの仕事が心から好きなんだよな。
多くの方の手に渡り、お楽しみいただくことを願っています。
In the end, 12 patterns were carefully selected and the collection of works was shaped into a single painting. When you hand over your business card, it's like starting a conversation by asking, "What is this?" I designed it with love while imagining Mr. Segawa saying, ``This is it...'' with great enthusiasm. As a designer, I was able to come up with a solution to the highly abstract and difficult theme of "art" through a kind of return to basics.
"I would never come up with an idea like this. I'm glad I left it to Mr. Otsuka." ah. After all, I really love this job. I hope that it will be in the hands of many people and that it will be enjoyed.
